Abstract

This article examines the skills involved in what is considered “unskilled” work: that of supermarket cashiers in Brazil (São Paulo) and Canada (Quebec). The effects of the introduction of new technologies on workers' skills in both societies are also discussed. The new technologies have both incorporated a great part of workers' knowledge into machinery, and increased the control over work, as well as reduced the control within work. However, they have not affected the social and emotional skills that jobs require of workers.
