Resumo
The beginning of the Romance Languages writing provides good data for the study of writing systems in general and orthography in particular. The study of this subject is relevant also for the research in Historical Linguistics. In this paper, the origin ofPortuguese orthography is analysed with particular reference to basic parameters involved in its formation. It shows that it is misleading to say that the orthography at that time was phonetically based.
