Abstract

The Brazilian children’s behavior and their relationship whit the adults in the XIX century Brazil were observed and reported by “foreign travelers” who came here. In their accounts, they criticized that relationship and called attention to a “way of being”, typical of the Brazilian children, which contrasted with the European children’s behavior. Such reference gave rise to the idea that the Brazilian children had inadequate behavior and so there should be norms to “civilize” them and regulate their way of behaving. Having this context in mind, the concepts of child/childhood in the mentioned period will be discussed, out of the travelers’ accounts bibliography, the text by Ina von Binzer, who visited Brazil around 1881 (My Romans, joys and sad nesses of a German educator in Brazil) and the possibility of establishing a civilizing process for the Brazilian children.

Key-Words:

Children; History; Behavior; Travel accounts.}, number={5}, journal={Conexões}, author={Oliveira, Magda Sarat}, year={2008}, month={out.}, pages={59} }
