Abstract

In the “Discipline of pure reason in the dogmatic use” of the Critique of pure reason, Kant holds the thesis according to which the virtues of mathematics are the effect of a series of procedures which, however effective in the sphere of that science, are impracticable in the sphere of the science whose possibility is being examined, that is, metaphysics. These procedures are: definition, the use of axioms, and demonstration. For the philosopher, it is not possible to make definitions or demonstrations in the philosophical domain, nor to have axioms. However, he clarifies that these are not feasible in the sense that the mathematician understands them. This paper explains how the mathematician conceives these three terms, according to Kant.
