Abstract
This article presents the development of the etiology of mental illnesses in Immanuel Kant’s critical project. Such development produced a review of his early notions of madness and metaphysics, which led to the identification of a type of illusion that he called transcendental. Based on the analogy between madness and metaphysics, his criticism indicated not only the limits of knowledge but also of mental health, that is, by revealing the pathological potency of reason, it was revealed that one cannot know everything in the same proportion as one cannot be mentally healthy. Deriving madness from a conflict of reason with itself, it was in reason and its functioning, more than in the body, that madness found its home, which reverberated in the displacement of the initial prestige granted to medicine in the etiology and treatment of madness, granting it to philosophy. In addition, it hindered his Enlightenment project of social progress.
