The city, the immigrant and the silence

Abstract

This article will deal with the relationship between the city of Cuiabá/MT with immigrants, especially Haitians and Venezuelans, resulting from environmental catastrophes - earthquakes, socio-political-economic - political crisis. In order to do so, I will take the concept of city and silence as Orlandi taught us in several of his works, especially in the book “The shapes of silence”, from 1992, winner of the Jabuti prize. It is noteworthy that this work is part of a voluminous work by the author in the consolidation of the Discourse Analysis of materialist line that is sustained in the midst of three great regions of meaning: linguistics, psychoanalysis and historical materialism. In bringing this relationship to light, we also consider the studies by Payer (1992) and the NEPO-Nucleus of Population Studies “Elza Berquó”, from the State University of Campinas-UNICAMP. The complexity and heterogeneity of these processes involve much deeper reflections on Venezuelan immigration in the global South, especially on the northern border, in particular, in states such as Mato Grosso, after the crossing to Roraima. We intend to give visibility to the way in which immigrants are signified in the city spaces of Cuiabá and how this process starts to constitute the relationship with the foreigner, the expatriate, the refugee, in short, in the immense range of adjectives that come to qualify this coexistence.
