Abstract

This article investigates the persona of Brian Molko, lead singer of the band Placebo, formed in the late 1990s, in dialogue with contemporary approaches to persona performance. Through fan archives and music magazine articles (1997-1999), it analyzes how Molko negotiated an "ordinary extraordinariness", anticipating the phenomenon of "reluctant personas" in contemporary pop music. The research uses anecdotal theory (Gallop, 2002) to explore how social media intensifies the relationship between theatricality, performativity and engagement with the performance of the ordinary.
