Abstract

This article deals with the political implications of changes in technologies and in patterns of work for people's' lives, particularly those of men. The relationships between the world of work and the private world are revealed in these situations of change. The article is based on a case study of newspaper compositors in England. Organizational and technological innovations changed the industry from employing exclusively men to include the employment of women. This involved a wide process of threats and adaptations. The implications of such changes in the gender composition of the workforce are also relevant for trade union practices and politics.
