Abstract
We examine instances of language commodification in which fragments of a “small language”, Brazilian sign language (Libras), appear as added value to niche products that would otherwise be trivial. Following Critical Sociolinguistics studies that have described the emergence of discourses of language as profit (to the detriment of discourses of language as pride), we present data selected in virtual environments of a virtual store that offers decorative products with spelling signs in libras (fingerspelling) transliterating words in Portuguese. In contrast, we did not find any accessibility resources in libras offered by the website promoting the sale of such products. Our analysis indicates that the growing visibility of libras among the hearing segments of the population has led to the materialization of language ideologies in which libras appears as a sign of “inclusion”, “empathy”, “respect for diversity”. Despite being based on perceptions rejected by deaf social movements, these ideologies seem to enable the generation of solidarity capital, a subtype of symbolic capital. Our argument, therefore, is that commercial products such as those we analyzed serve the fetishized celebration of diversity (including linguistic diversity), and thus the mobilization of libras as a sign of a “social cause” with which it is possible to engage through consumption, and which is accommodated by the hearing gaze and produced for that gaze, the “ableist compassion” of the consumer supporting the attempt to commodify libras.
