Abstract

Some feminist writers have suggested that women are absent from the modernist canon since they barely figure in the histories of art and literature at the beginning of this century. Thus, the specialist in the Sociology of Culture, Janet Wolff, pointing to the “radical potential of the deconstrutive strategies of modernist culture” for women, also says that the public world of work and city life “was barred to respectable women”. I begin to argue in this sketch that this is not exactly so for Brazilian painters and writers, as the example of Patricia Galvão - PAGU - may help to show.
