Abstract

Theories of queer performativity, ritual performance, and staged performance all contribute to our understanding of gender and sexuality. Each body of theory, however, is limited in ways that the other bodies of theory can correct. These corrections have not been forthcoming because too few scholars read across disciplines. Queer performativity theorists have concluded that gender performance as such is parodic, carnivalesque, or otherwise subversive. I use ethnographic research on a culinary performance of masculinity in Argentina to argue that gender performance is not always a subversive act; sometimes it is an enactment of privilege.
