Marianne North (1830-90) é uma figura enigmática na “arte” e na “ciência” da Inglaterra vitoriana. A maioria dos historiadores da arte e da ciência a veria como marginal nos dois campos. Este trabalho não passa de uma tentativa preliminar de pôr a obra desta artista, viajante e escritora do século dezenove, no contexto dos trabalhos recentes sobre gênero em geografia, arte botânica, história natural e ciência. Como ficará claro, trata-se de um exercício essencialmente exploratório e Marianne North não é fácil de ser situada nesses contextos.
Abstract
Marianne North (1830-1890) is an enigmatic figure in “art” and “science” in Victorian England. Most historians of art and of science would regard her as marginal in both of these fields. The present paper is no more than a preliminary attempt to set the work of this nineteenth century female artist, traveler, and author into the context of recent writing on gender in geography, botanical art, natural history and science. As will become evident, this is essentially an exploratory exercise and Marianne North does not fit easily into these contexts.Referências
