Abstract

The article presents contributions of what could be called an African perspective for gender and feminist studies, based on the works and provocations of the Nigerian authors Ifi Amadiume and Oyèrónké Oyěwùmí. Their discussions will be considered in relation to other theories of gender studies, mainly the work of Judith Butler and Marilyn Strathern. Then, the particular case of Danish author Signe Arnfred and her fieldwork in northern Mozambique will be used to consider how both ethnography and theoretical displacements - made possible by the African critique on feminism -have influenced her work, specifically with regard to the analysis of female initiation rites in Makhuwa contexts.
