Resumo

 

O texto trata de alguns aspectos das transformações históricas e de construção de gênero no Nordeste do Brasil, discutindo processos ao nível macro e micro que têm influenciado as vidas das mulheres de elite. O artigo oferece uma síntese da mudança sócioeconômica no estado da Paraíba e de uma elite familiar particular deste estado. A história dessa família particular é utilizada para explorar as mudanças e variações nas estratégias de casamento. Finalmente, exploram-se implicações possíveis dessas estratégias para as mulheres e suas experiências, processos e identidades marcados pelo gênero.

 

Abstract

 

This paper's aim is to adress some aspects of the historical transformations and construction of gender in Northeast Brazil through a discussion of the macro an microprocesses which influence the lives of elite women. Highlighting some of the relevant concerns from part of the literature on family history and socioeconomic change and on women's history and marriage strategies, the artic1e provides a summary of socioeconomic change in Paraiba and of one particular elite family from that state. The history of this particular family is used to explore shifts and variations in marriage strategies. Final1y the author explores some of the possible implications of these strategies for women and their gendered experiences, processes and identities.
