Resumo
Este ensaio argumenta que o pensamento de Smith deve ser interpretado a partir do contexto intelectual proporcionado pelo iluminismo escocês. As origens e a natureza específica desse movimento são apresentadas, procurando-se destacar alguns aspectos que diferenciam o pensamento social dos literati escoceses daquelas orientações que vieram a prevalecer no campo da economia.
Abstract
This essay argues that Adam Smith's thought should be interpreted within the intellectual context of the Scottish enlightenment. It discusses the origins and the specific nature of the enlightenment in Scotland in order to highlight the differences between the social theory of the Scottish literati and the dominant approach to economics.
