Resumo
O artigo evidencia a atuação de List como burocrata, secretário da Associação Alemã da Indústria e Comércio e deputado na Assembléia Legislativa de Württemberg para mostrar que boa parte de suas ideias econômicas, incluindo suas críticas à ortodoxia liberal clássica, já se encontravam formuladas antes de seu exílio nos Estados Unidos. Para situar este debate em um contexto maior, detalham-se não apenas o processo de difusão e ressignificação de A Riqueza das Nações nos territórios germânicos, mas também como List demonstra as inconsistências do free trade, em se tratando de países caracterizados por notáveis desníveis em termos de forças produtivas. Nota-se que, devido à sua experiência como burocrata, ainda sob forte influência do Cameralismo, este constituiu-se importante fonte de inspiração para List, sobretudo no que concerne ao papel do Estado na criação das condições propícias para o desenvolvimento econômico.
