Abstract
The recognition that migration is, in many cases, a joint action is consolidated, but its analysis is not so present in the literature, largely due to the lack of data. The purpose of this article is to create a proxy for the migrant's condition at the time of the displacement to provide clarification on how joint or individual the migration can be. Census data from 1991, 2000 and 2010 were used and the flow analyzed was Nordeste-São Paulo. It was found that the majority of recent in-migrants were in households where former immigrants also lived, in 1991 and 2000, however, in 2010, the majority of households were made up of recent in-migrants. Such results, combined with information about the relationship between recent in-migrants and the head of the household, demonstrate that joint migration mostly involves family relationships and is predominant as a form of displacement.
