Abstract

This article presents the process of unification and privatization of the paulista railways, located from the setup of working relationships established in the 1970s. Through the reporting of an old railman it is possible to understand the reasons of railway decay, which go beyond merely road competition. If inthe past the railroads represented progress and were major employers of workers, today it represents abandonment. As well as terraced workshops, stations and flats workers, railway heritage is linked to the history of work on the railroad. Privatization removed elements which enclosed a copy of the identity.
