District of Caldas [MG], the landscape characterization from a local newspapers collection (1875-1888)

Abstract

This paper is part of a Master Degree research, developed at the Unicamp (State University of Campinas). It describes the process of building the Cultural Landscape of the District of Caldas [Minas Gerais], with the local newspapers as the starting factor. The newspapers present the views and opinions of the most influential people of that community, so they are talken as mirrors through whichwe want to see the process of territory shaping. The period analised is 1875 to 1888. This place was interpreted through the eyes of writers and editors, so it could bring to reality a certain distortion of it, which does not invalidate its contents, but show the influence of these actors. The difference in thisproject is the textual interpretation of the construction of Cultural Landscapes and the ordination of the territory, in the proposed period, only through local newspapers; allowing the construction of maps based on looking, reading, interpretation, imagination and registration of this reality abstraction, atextual interpretation result. The period taken to this study has a little or no registry in that region, so it is a significant contribution.
