Abstract
The paper focuses on some philosophical problems concerning human visual perception and discuses the possibility of its simulation by artificial/mechanical systems. Section I discusses the casual theory of perception and emphasizes some of its difficulties. Section II is a survey of recente developments introduced in the tradiotional causal theory of peception and shows some of their flaws. Section III develops na alternative modelo of the relationship perceiver/environment based on the notion of biological function. Finally, in section IV, the possibility of designing a perceiving machine comes into play again and is discussed in hte light of the biologically-based model sketched in the previous section.
