Resumo
O objetivo deste artigo é avaliar se, e em qual medida, a desindustrialização da economia brasileira afetou a geografia do voto nos pleitos eleitorais das últimas duas décadas, em particular, nos interessando examinar a inflexão do voto petista. O trabalho considera a desindustrialização como um choque econômico exógeno que, alterando a renda e a natureza do emprego disponíveis nas localidades, afeta o apoio eleitoral ao partido nacionalmente incumbente. Nossas principais fontes de dados empíricos são: o Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE) e o Tribunal Superior Eleitoral (TSE); e nossas unidades espaciais de análise, os municípios. Nossos resultados confirmam a hipótese de que a desindustrialização afetou negativamente a votação do Partido dos Trabalhadores. Ressaltamos, ainda, as características regionais de tal processo, fundamentais, sobretudo, à compreensão do resultado eleitoral de 2018. A originalidade do artigo está em preencher uma lacuna da literatura de estudos eleitorais ao tratar das mudanças estruturais no capitalismo brasileiro como vetor explicativo primordial.
