Abstract
In this paper, we use songs about rain in Fortaleza and interviews with their composers, to analyze the different meanings that rain carries. Different experiences with the city, socio-economic changes, and image changes lead to different representations of rain. We notice that older artists associated the rain with drought as something that leads back to the migration of northeastern Brazilians to South and Southestern Brazil. To younger artists, rain in the city amplifies and makes visible structural inequalities and the unequal distribution of public funds between different neighborhoods of the city. We conclude that music can be an important avenue to understand urban social and cultural changes, and recent changes in the image and imaginary of the Brazilian Northeast.
