Abstract
This essay analyzes the mexicaness phenomenon, a nativistic, millenarian, and neo-traditionalist movement, which preconizes the revitalization of prehispanic culture. The mexicaness movement is formed by middle-class Mexicans, urban inhabitants, mestizo, and non-Indians, who desire to take on a native identity. The mexicaness is part of the new identity and religious movements, and it can not be understood without references
to the effects of the over-modernity in the resurgence of primary identities.
