Abstract

Mariângela Joanilho presents the discussion of French grammarian Dumarsais in the 18 century on tropes and semantic relations in language. These discussions show, in this author's view, the constitutive role metaphor plays in languages. This constitutive character is then presented from an enunciative perspective in an analysis of metaphors as the material support of the discursive processes that constitute the meaning of national language in Brazilian journalistic articles from the beginning of the 20 century.
