The palavras, o espaço e a língua : O vocabulário pernambucano

Abstract

This paper analyses the vocabulário Pernambucano, by Pereira da Costa, from the beginning of the 20th century. The discourse of this dictionary produces a shift in the history Brazilian lexicography, changing from a historical perspective to a synchronic and geographical perspective. In the entries, the relation between common and proper names installs a national geographical discourse in the regional dictionary. This discourse refers to the memory of the early settlers and their conquest of spaces. The analyses also show how synonymy, derivarion and exemples work in the construction of this synchronic and geographical image of the language.
