Abstract
This article analyses the change in the designation of the condition of being a sitezen which caused the word "cidadania" (citizenship) to be originated. The observation of the semantic moviment in "cidadão" (citizen) in a corpus of dictionaries from the 18th and 19th centuries shows that "cidadania" originates from the modern jurídical meaning of "cidadão", what leads the author to argue that semantic evidênce between "cidadania" and "cidadão" is an effect of the evidence by which etymology is taken and that derivation should not be treated as a purely morphplogical issue.
