Abstract

This article presents an analysis of Georgian written sources of the 5th-12th, which shows that as a language of a Christian People of the east, georgian was in competition with greek, since the legitimation of the former as a sacred language was hindered by Byzantium. This explains why, according to the author, vernacular languages in the east and the West developed into literary and official languages at different times and in different situations.
