Abstract
This article aims to examine the functionig of hyperlinks in hypertexts and to discuss how they help in the process of semantic, cognitive and interactional reference-making. Hyperlinks are instruments which characterize eletronic texts: they enable the occurrence of an infinite and intricate network of interconnection between texts and pieces of information and of knowledge on a worldwide basis. Besides being vectorial-deitic elements, hyperlinks take the reader to other virtual pages in a fast, economic and practial way. They bear a complex process of auto and hetero-reference-making that is but visual effectiveness of the interdiscursive/intertextual character which is much more dynamic and challenging to reading process. It is how this happens in hypertext that this article will be showing.
