Abstract
This piece of research studies the constitution of Semantics in Brazil at the end of the 19th century taking as object the work od Pacheco Silva Jr., whence the relation of the constitution of the discipline with the thinking of the author moves from a naturalist to a historical approach is observed:this passage is developed through the constitution of a socio-political subject of language (the people), wich is founded upon na ethical-politcal tension between the principle of unit of the State and the principle of difference which constitutes the Brazilian character.
