Abstract
The present work aims to observe the approach of the phenomenon of linguistic variation made by the Portuguese Language teacher in the classroom of a seventh grade class of Elementary School. Based on authors such as Bagno (2001), Bortoni-Ricardo (2005; 2006), Cyranka (2016), Vieira and Freire (2016), we carried out a field research with viewing and interview practices, in a public school, located in the city of Floriano - PI (Brazil). From the data collected, we established a parallel between the teacher's knowledge and beliefs about the phenomenon of variation and their performance in the classroom. As a result, we found a practice rooted in the belief of a homogeneous language and a superficial approach, which considers only the diatopic perspective as a variationist phenomenon, characterized by linguistic differences related to the geographic space of the speakers, in an approach based on traditional grammar and not on the language in their effective uses.
