Resumo

A escala esquerda-direita é uma boa proxy das opiniões das elites parlamentares da América Latina em questões econômicas e morais? Este artigo responde a essa questão usando duas estratégias: Análise de Componentes Principais e análises de regressão. O resultado mostra que quanto mais à direita no espectro ideológico, mais os parlamentares são, coerentemente, a favor do liberalismo econômico. Mas, contraditoriamente, mostram um tipo de liberalismo estranho: liberal na economia e conservador em liberdades individuais. Esse conservadorismo, em termos de valores morais, é fortemente determinado pela religiosidade.
