Resumo

Este artigo documentou criticamente uma vasta literatura sobre os múltiplos resultados associados à participação nas cadeias globais de valor (CGVs). Em particular, este artigo analisa as definições e medidas quantitativas de uma dimensão particular da análise de CGVs que possui duas facetas: o upgrading econômico e social. Mais especificamente, discute-se a perspectiva econômica do upgrading, que é usualmente associada a “atuar em estágios de maior valor adicionado”, e supõe-se que seja seguido por transbordamentos positivos em relação à tecnologia e produtividade. Este artigo enfatiza a diversidade de definições e medidas de upgrading econômico, considerando-a como um reflexo, até certo ponto, da ausência de um aparato teórico sistemático. O artigo conclui com algumas considerações sobre o papel dos formuladores de políticas econômicas na promoção do upgrading social e sua importância como tópico de pesquisa para a literatura de CGVs.
