Abstract

In contemporary economies, the performance of innovation systems is in a large measure, associated to the intensity and efficiency of interaction among the different players involved in the generation and diffusion of new knowledges and technologies. These interactions are translated into a kind of institutionalized mutual "learning" that contributes to create a stock of economically useful knowledges. From this general postulate, the paper offers an analisys of the main developments in the nature of the interactions among scientific research and industrial activity in developed countries, focusing the new ways of public power intervention aiming to favour and to directly support these collaborations. The paper is based essentially in the information gathered in two comparative studies of the more recent experiences observed in the main industrialized countries, carried out under the patronage of OECD and the EU. The "industry-science relationships" (RCI) prevailing in these contexts are here examined under the perspective of the modalities and of the relative importance of the available cooperation dispositives, of the new institutional arrangements and of the structures of incentive that are being widely adopted by local powers. Finally, some policy implications and the main recommendations deriving from these studies are briefly presented.
