Abstract

In evolutionary economics, technological change is closely related to the dynamics of the industrial structure and competition, to the internal organization of firms and to the relation of those firms with their clients, other firms, governments and/or research centers and universities. While some authors have focused on the role of incremental changes and cumulativeness, others have examined the role of radical changes. Using the punctuated equilibrium model, this paper presents a case study about the evolution of polyolefin technology, in order to discuss the nature of technological change processes, and how they are related to the industry evolution and the behavior of incumbent and new companies.
