Abstract

This paper examines patterns of interaction between agents of the agricultural machinery and implements Local Productive Arrangements (LPA) in Rio Grande do Sul (RS), and its influence in the creation, use, and distribution of knowledge. The present work thus offers a contribution to the understanding of interaction processes in LPA, as well as the relation between those processes and the innovation capacity of selected firms. A field research was undertaken. The evidence gathered demonstrates that the local environment is relevant for the development of the learning processes in the LPA of RS. The significance of the local environment turns on the peculiarities of the firms that manufacture agricultural machinery (wheel tractors and combines), mechanical traction implements and less complex parts and components. These peculiarities, considering size, source of capital, the technological complexity of product development and the markets targeted, imply distinct learning mechanisms, since sources of knowledge are diversely articulated.
