Abstract

The economic, social and institutional issues of a digital-based society impose big challenges to the conventional economic analysis. Because value comes from flexibility and immateriality, an economy organized around the software establishes a dynamic of short cycles of innovation, transient markets and strong propensity to monopolies. The expansion of the digital environments helps this pattern to spread through the economy as a whole, de-materializing and affecting even the most traditional activities. This article discusses what are the main forces behind the software economics and outlines a framework to analyze some of its variations as they appear in the real world.
