Abstract

The Brazilian industry and global value chains: an analysis based on the aeronautical, electronics and medical device industries, authored by Timothy Sturgeon, Gary Gereffi, Andrew Guinn and Ezequiel Zylberberg, is the product of a survey commissioned by the National Confederation of Industry (CNI), motivated by the reconfiguration of global production and trade. The research has as main objective to evaluate the integration of Brazil to the global value chains (CGV), as well as the role played by the institutions and the possibilities in the field of industrial policy. Based on three case studies - the aerospace, medical device and electronics industries -, the book contributes policy recommendations, stimulating debate about the role of industrial policies in promoting key sectors for economic growth. The authors' main argument is that Brazil should increase its participation in GVC in areas of specialization oriented towards exports, considering segments with high added value in which it can be globally competitive. For that, industrial policy plays a fundamental role.
