Abstract

Social innovations aim to respond to social needs and problems, expanding the instruments and capacities for the participation of agents in the construction of solutions, potentially starting from the collaboration of different agents, organizations and institutions. Universities play active roles in the context of these innovations, relating to the demands of society. It is investigated how universities play these roles, aiming to observe university extension at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. A survey focused on a sample of extension actions developed at the University was applied. The actions mapped contribute to the formulation/operationalization of innovations of a social nature, corroborating the understanding that universities play important roles in this context. They mainly contribute to the provision of resources and solutions for the community involved in the project.
