Abstract

This work describes noun and classifier incorporation in Paresi. Paresi is an Arawak language, spoken by approximately 3000 people in Mato Grosso (Brazil). In Paresi, there are three types of incorporation: nominal incorporation, and incorporation of classifiers and postpositions. In this article, the characteristics of the incorporation of nouns and classifiers are discussed, showing that there is an important relation between these categories. Classifiers probably come from nouns, but the two categories exhibit some differences of syntactic distribution, when we compare them in the incorporation process. My analysis is based on fieldwork (in the Formoso and Rio Verde communities) through the collection of texts and elicitation, and using a functional-typological approach (Mithun 1984; Haspelmath 2012).
