Abstract

The article aims to describe formal and functional aspects related to the linguistic categorization of body parts terms in the Aikanã language, considering that the domain of the human body is an ideal focus for semantic typology, since the body is a physical universal and all Languages have terms referring to their parts (Enfield; Majid; Staden 2006). The Aikanã language, considered genetically isolated, is spoken in the Guaporé region, more specifically, in the Tubarão-Latundê Indigenous community, in southeastern Rondônia. The corpus of the research consists of primary data resulting from consultation with speakers of the Aikanã language, via e-mail, as well as secondary data, with terms extracted, basically, from the Aikanã language root dictionary (Silva 2012). The present descriptive analysis recognizes a complex Aikanã nominal morphology involving morphosyntactic operations resulting from processes such as: nominal incorporation, nominalization, classifiers, in addition to observable processes of grammaticalization of terms of body parts. Finally, we present results that may contribute to comparative research dedicated to the instigation of linguistic universals.
