Abstract
The food heritage, here considered intangible cultural heritage, has value for the communities that own it and for the market. As it has a market value, such heritage requires some form of protection that allows for its appropriation. Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), created to protect the spirit's creations, have been considered as a system capable of guaranteeing protection to the food heritage. The objective of this text is to discuss the possibility of using IPR, especially geographical indications (GI), as a way of appropriating the food heritage from a theoretical review and observation of two cases of intangible heritage: the craft of pans from Goiabeiras and the ways of making Serro and Canastra cheeses It is concluded that the GI of the cases mentioned, with due care, can be used in the appropriation of food heritage.
