Resumo
Este artigo centra-se na análise da apropriação pública da herança cultural arqueológica marajoara, cuja reavivação, em um contexto capitalista, assume novos significados. O texto chama a atenção para as expectativas do público sobre o passado e os entendimentos incorretos causados pela difusão do jargão arqueológico. Propõe-se que é necessário refletir sobre o papel do arqueólogo, historiador e educador na criação de tradições culturais, assim como de nossas próprias construções epistemológicas sobre o “outro” (o passado), entendendo os contextos sociais, políticos e econômicos nos quais essa atividade acontece.
