Resumen

Durante las décadas de 2000 y 2010, el crecimiento de la producción de azúcar y etanol estimuló la expansión de la caña de azúcar en nuevas regiones de Brasil, reduciendo la concentración de São Paulo. Este artículo tiene como objetivo analizar en qué medida el crecimiento de la producción de caña de azúcar en las regiones periféricas condujo a un aumento de las capacidades de conocimiento. Como una forma de considerar las asimetrías regionales, el enfoque utilizado diferencia la base de conocimiento en asociación con los sistemas regionales de innovación (SRI) y las relaciones centro-periferia. Para ello, utilizamos datos sobre empleo formal y artículos científicos en la región Centro-Sur del país entre 2003 y 2017. Los resultados muestran que existen limitaciones en la difusión del conocimiento asociado a la producción de caña de azúcar, dado que una parte importante de la producción de conocimiento permanece concentrada en las tradicionales regiones de crecimiento del interior de São Paulo.
