Resumo

Durante as décadas de 2000 e 2010, o crescimento da produção de açúcar e etanol estimulou a expansão da cana-de-açúcar em novas regiões do Brasil, reduzindo a concentração de São Paulo. Este artigo tem como objetivo analisar em que medida o crescimento da produção canavieira em regiões periféricas levou ao aumento das capacidades de conhecimento. Como forma de considerar as assimetrias regionais, utiliza-se da abordagem das diferenciações da base de conhecimento em associação com os sistemas regionais de inovação (SRI) e as relações centro-periferia. Para isso, utilizamos dados sobre o emprego formal e artigos científicos no Centro-Sul do país entre 2003 e 2017. Os resultados demonstram que existem limitantes na difusão do conhecimento canavieiro dado que importante parcela da produção de conhecimento continua concentrada nas tradicionais regiões de crescimento no interior paulista.
