Resumo

Este ensaio argumenta que, no século XX, o imaginário interdisciplinar sobre a linguagem foi afetado por uma surpreendente união entre os produtos tecnológicos da ciência e a vertente da filosofia da linguageme da mente assentada sobre a noção de pragmática. O resgate da concepção de linguagem como ação, defendida por dois cientistas visionários da primeira metade do século, vem sendo possível, dos anos 1990 aos dias de hoje, graças ao espetacular progresso das técnicas de captura de sinais fisiológicos. Assim, o tear encantado de Sherrington e o movimento audível de Stetson, repaginados, prometem fundamentar uma ciência da mente que se torna mais apta a dialogar com as humanidades à medida que se livra das pragas do reducionismo e do fisicalismo.
