Abstract
In this essay, the Brazilian TV series “Three Percent” is analyzed, which focuses on the dystopian effects of the meritocratic utopia. The text reveals how the fiction develops a critical view of meritocracy as an ideology of inequality, highlighting the “religious” nature of the hope for success among the subordinate masses in today’s capitalist societies and the symbolic violence of the concept of merit. The narrative also expresses the discomfort of societies – like the Brazilian one – where the highly selective higher education system determines a profound social divide.
