Abstract
Há 50 anos, em 1966, publicava-se a primeira edição da tese de doutorado de William Labov, The Social Stratification of English in New York City, obra seminal dos estudos sociolinguísticos da variação linguística. No Brasil, a semente variacionista encontrou campo fértil, com diversos grupos de pesquisa e trabalhos que se desenvolveram desde fins da década de 1970, cujos conceitos e métodos, até hoje, remetem à tese de Labov.
