Abstract
The aim of this article is to focus on the development of the distinctive features by Jakobson (1977). We consider how Jakobson, thenceforth Saussure's work, pressures defining notions regarding the saussurean linguistic sign, most notably the opposition; making way to the insertion of the acoustic level in the speech chain and opening discussion to the relation amongst sound and meaning, which has been debated throughout the centuries since four centuries before Christ until the present time. We approach the concepts of phonemic opposition, the criticism about the phoneme irreducibility, the distinctiveness amongst sound traits and the openness to the consideration of the speech expressivity when aggregating the sound symbolism and the notion of the sound and meaning linguistically motivated relation.
