Abstract

In this paper we present a study in the area of comparative onomastics whose objective is to contrast two onomastic repertoires of close languages and cultures. We compared the crematonyms that designate clothing and accessories stores and restaurants in two places: the Spanish city of Castro and the Brazilian city of Marechal Cândido Rondon. The analysis of the data considered the following parameters: area of origin and languages used, naming criteria and structure of the crematonyms. The convergent results confirm the influence of globalization, the prestige of the English language, and description and suggestion as the most important denominative criteria. The divergent results indicate that there is a greater proclivity for the first procedure at the Brazilian site and for the second at the Spanish site. This leads to a greater preference for noun phrases in the Brazilian uses, which contrasts with the use of other types of structures in the crematonyms of the Spanish city.
