En este trabajo, investigamos el efecto de la estructura de la información sobre el orden de las palabras en las oraciones interrogativas con "por qué" en italiano y español peninsular y la cuestión de si estas dos lenguas difieren entre sí. Para ello, hemos llevado a cabo dos estudios empíricos. En un estudio de corpus paralelos, comparamos la frecuencia de los patrones 'por qué' SV y 'por qué'Vs, así como la distribución de sujetos no focales y focales en los dos idiomas. Con el fin de obtener una comprensión más profunda del impacto de las categorías estructurales de la información de enfoque y la didad en el orden de las palabras en los interrogativos con "por qué", realizamos un estudio de elección forzada. Los resultados indican que el enfoque afecta al orden de las palabras interrogativas con 'por qué' en italiano, mientras que el orden de las palabras en español peninsular no está determinado por ninguna categoría estructural de información. Mostramos que los interrogativos con 'por qué' en italiano y español peninsular difieren de dos maneras. En primer lugar, los sujetos no focales se producen en posición preverbal en italiano, mientras que ocupan la posición postverbal en español peninsular. En segundo lugar, el italiano revela un menor nivel de opcionalidad con respecto a los patrones de orden de palabras. Aunque el español peninsular parece ser más restrictivo, suponemos que esta limitación está relacionada con una mayor flexibilidad en relación con el orden de las palabras en español peninsular que en italiano que no permite 'por qué' VSO en contraste con el español peninsular.
